Be a learning machine and share what you learn.
My one big goal for 2023. Be a learning machine. Share what I learn. Why?
Four reasons.
Reason 1: Here is my supercut from Charlie Munger's graduation speech. You are not going to get far in life based on what you already know. You're going to advance in life by what you're going to learn. It's not something you do just to advance in life.
Wisdom acquisition is your moral duty. Berkshire Hathaway has the best invest long-term investment record in the entire history of civilization.
The skill that got Berkshire through one decade, would not have sufficed to get it through the next decade. Without Warren Buffett being a continuous learning machine, the record would have been absolutely impossible.
I constantly see people rise in life who were not the smartest sometimes; not even the most diligent but they are learning machines. They go to bed every night a little wiser than they were when they got up; And boy does that habit help particularly when you have a long run ahead of you. You can progress only when you learn the method of learning.
Nothing has served me better in my long life than continuous learning. And if you watched Warren Buffett with a time clock, half the time that he spends is just sitting on his ass and reading. A big chunk of the rest of the time is spent talking one-on-one either on the telephone or personally with highly gifted people whom he trusts and who trust him."
Reason 2: As a leader, what I know is not enough to help my team thrive and hit home runs in 2023. What got us here will not get us where we want to go. This will be the year we learn the most and achieve things we have not done before.
Reason 3: As a teacher, the challenges my students face in 2023 are way different than what they faced before. As my reach is growing with word of mouth, so are the nature of the challenges my students want my help on.
Reason 4: Our twin boys will turn 6 in 2023. My wife and I wish to continue to instill a curious and learning mindset in them. By hopefully being role models. What I love about this goal is, this is both a goal and a system. Because, I learn best when I learn to share and teach.
